What to do with expired Nest Protect? ›

You'll no longer be protected from smoke or CO if you don't replace your Nest Protect. About two weeks before it expires, Nest Protect will light up with a yellow light. Press the Nest button and it will say, “Nest Protect has expired. Replace it now.” Buy a new alarm and recycle the expired one.

You can run a Safety Checkup with the Nest app for a 2nd generation Nest Protect, or press the Nest button on any Nest Protect. The test takes a few seconds to complete, and is loud.

Open the Nest app on your phone and tap Protect at the bottom, tap the Settings gear at the top followed by the alarm you're interested in, and then go to Technical Info. If it says your model is Topaz-1. x then you have a First Generation, while Topaz-2. x denotes the Second Generation alarm.

Low battery: Protect will sound one chirp every 60 seconds until you replace the batteries. To stop the chirping, you need to replace the batteries with Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) batteries.

Almost every network is subject to wireless interference which can cause your Protect to disconnect from your home Wi-Fi network. Wireless interference can be caused by the following: Large furniture and appliances. Walls and floors.
